Abstract:

This descriptive study aimed to identify the sports participation motives of WVSU varsity and non-varsity athletes. The acquired data were obtained through the use of questionnaire-checklist patterned from the task evaluation questionnaire of Deci and Ryan (2000). Mean and rank were used for descriptive data analyses while t-test and kruskal-wallis were used for inferential data analyses. The level of significance was set at .05 alpha. Varsity players who have competed locally and nationally considered enjoyment as their motive for sports competition. Furthermore, male varsity athletes and those who participated in purely individual and team sports also considered enjoyment as their motive for competing in sports. However, regional varsity players and those who are playing individual/dual sports along with female varsity players perceived competence as their motive for sports competition. When grouped as non-varsity, players who competed in local, regional, national and who play for purely individual, individual/dual and team together with male and female players considered enjoyment as their motive for sports participation. No significant difference existed in the participation motives of varsity athletes in sports competition when grouped as to sex, type of sport and level of competition. No significant difference existed in the participation motive of non-varsity athletes in sports competition when grouped as to sex, type of sport and level of competition.
