Abstract:

This descriptive research investigated the English language proficiency among grade six multigrade pupils in the Division of Guimaras. This study involved 50 grade six multigrade pupils in the Division of Guimaras during the school year 2006 -2007. The study further investigated whether or not sex, final rating in English, and exposure to English Support Instructional Materials affect the English language proficiency. Two instruments – Division Achievement Test and a validated researcher- made questionnaire were utilized for data gathering. The statistics used were Mean, Standard Deviation, and t-test. The .05 Alpha level was used for acceptance or rejection of the null hypothesis. The findings revealed that generally, the grade six multigrade pupils had “average” English language proficiency. When grouped as to sex, both males and females had “average” English language proficiency. As to final rating in English, the respondents with “average” final ratings and those with “low” final ratings both achieved “average” English language proficiency. As exposure to support instructional materials in English, the respondents with “average” exposure and those with “low” exposure had also “average” English language proficiency. Significant differences on the English language proficiency of the respondents were noted when they were grouped as to final rating in English and exposure to support instructional materials. The significant difference in favor of the “average” group showed that the respondents with “average” final ratings and exposure to support instructional materials in English were more proficient in the English language than those respondents with “low’ final ratings and exposure to support instructional materials in English.
