Students conceptual understanding of selected topics in physics through students and pre-service teachers generated questions

Abstract:

This descriptive study aimed of determining the levels of conceptual understanding and the cognitive domain of generated questions involving heat and thermodynamics. The subjects of the study were the senior high school students and the preservice teacher of West Visayas State University during the second semester, school year 2009-2010. The data-gathering instruments used were an observation guide and a researcher-made test. The statistical tools used were frequency, percentage , mean, and standard deviation for the descriptive analysis and the Krus-Wallis Test for determining differences in conceptual understanding among the variables. The results showed that of the 155 questions generated by the senior high school students, 35 questions (22%) were factual knowledge , 66 questions (43%) were conceptual understanding , and 54 questions (35%) were reasoning and analysis. Of the 153 questions generated by the preservice teacher , 77 questions (50%) were factual knowledge, 44 questions (29%) were conceptual understanding, and 32 questions (21%) were reasoning and analysis. Comparing with that of the preservice teacher, the percentage of the students' generated factual knowledge questions was 22%, which is 28% less than that of the preservice teacher's generated questions (50%); that of the conceptual understanding questions was 43%, which is 14% higher than that of the preservice teacher (29%); and that of the reasoning and analysis questions was 35% which is 14% higher than that of the preservice teacher's generated questions (21%). The level of students' conceptual understanding of heat and thermodynamics was low. Moreover, the level of students' conceptual understanding of heat and thermodynamics was not significantly different from the level of cognitive domain of the test questions involving heat and thermodynamics.
