Awareness of stroke, its risk factors and warning signs

Abstract:

This study assessed the awareness of three hundred seventy one residents, two hundred seventeen females and one hundred fifty four males, of Brgy. Lawaan Roxas City, Capiz regarding stroke, its risk factors and its warning signs. One-on-one interview was conducted with the respondents ages 18 years and above. BAsed on the data, 96.5% of the respondents are aware of stroke. From their responses, the most known warning signs are sudden onset of speech problem (74.9%), followed by sudden onset of dizziness (72.8%) and tehn sudden onset of breathlessness (71.7%). The top 3 least known warning signs of stroke are sudden onset of arm leg (59.6%) followed by sudden onset of drowsiness (59.8%) and sudden onset of double vison (62.3%). On the other hand, the most commonly known risk factor is high blood pressure (86.3%). This is then followed by high levels of cholesterol (81.7%) and overweight /obesity (77.9%). The least recognized risk factors are the following: Sex (50.9%), Drug ABuse (55.8%) and Race (62.3%). In terms of the sources of information about stroke, the most frequent answer was family and friends (63.68%), followed by mass media (51.8%) and general practitioners or doctors (49.9%). The least identifies sources of information were references (17.5%) and other sources susch as personal experience, the internet, etc. (14.3%)
