Abstract:

This study aimed to screen and identify the fungal populations present from contact lens cases. The duration of the cases used were six months and one year. Saboraud's dextrose broth was used as the enrichment media, where the contact lens scraping were suspended to culture growing fungal populations. The serial dilution, spread plate method, and agar block were the techniques employed to isolate the fungi. Three replicates were prepared from each dilution of contact lens scraping. Macroscropic and microscopic characteristics of fungal species were used as basis for identification. The following fungi isolated and identified from the 6 month old contact lens were: aspergillus fumigatus, aspergillus flavus and aspergillos niger. In the 1 year old contact lens case, the same 3 species of fungi aspergillus fumigatus, aspergillus flavus and aspergillus niger, were isolated with the addition of curvularia lunata.
