Abstract:

This study aimed to determine the three commonly-used word recognition strategies that develop word recognition skills of Grade 3 pupils of Pavia Elementary School for the school year 2015-2016. The respondents of the study were the 30 Grade 3 pupils of Special Science Class and regular pupils of Pavia Pilot Elementary School. Specifically this piece of investigation sought to answer the following question: (1) What are the three (3) commonly-used word recognition strategies of Grade 3 pupils taken as an entire group? (2) What are the three (3) commonly-used word recognition strategies of Grade 3 pupils when they are classified according to the type of their section--SSC and Regular? (3) Is there a significant relationship between the word recognition strategies and the development of word recognition skills among Grade 3 pupils? The descriptive and inferential method of research were used and the data gathering instrument consist of, checklist and vocabulary test. Descriptive statistical tools such as mean rank and frequency count were used while the inferential statistical tool used was the T-test to identify the significant relationship between variables. As for the results, the three commonly-used word recognition strategies of the entire group were context clues, phonics and picture clues.
