Abstract:

This descriptive study aimed to determine the teachers’ perceptions in the use of mother tongue based-multilingual education (MTB-MLE) as a medium of instruction as a whole group and when classified according to grade level taught, years in service, highest educational attainment, and number of seminars attended. It involved 73 public elementary school teachers teaching Kindergarten up to Grade III in the District of Pavia. The validated Likert type five-point scale survey questionnaire containing 29 items served as the instrument of the study. Mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentages were used as descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney test set at 0.05 alpha level of significance were used as inferential statistics. The results revealed that the teachers favorably perceived mother tongue based-multilingual education (MTB-MLE) as a medium of instruction when taken as a whole group and when classified according to grade level taught, years in service, highest educational attainment and number of seminars attended. There was no significant difference in the teachers’ perceptions in the use of mother tongue based-multilingual education (MTB-MLE) as medium of instruction when classified according to grade level taught, years in service and highest educational attainment. However, a significant difference was found when teachers were classified according to the number of seminars attended. This shows that seminars and trainings were likely eye-openers to teachers enabling them to have favorable perceptions towards curricular innovations such as MTB-MLE. Teachers should be given more opportunities to attend seminars and trainings about MTB-MLE as a medium of instruction
