Computer-assisted instruction in the development of pupils' higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract:

This experimental research aimed to ascertain the effect of computer-assisted instruction and lecture discussion method in the development of higher-order thinking skills among the grade six pupils of Saint Mary's Academy of Capiz, Roxas City. Conducted on January to February 2010, this study utilized 84 respondents who were selected at Saint Mary's Academy of Capiz using the convenient sampling. Three data gathering instruments were utilized: the researcher made test on higher-order thinking skills, learning activities and lessons for computer-assisted instruction group and learning activities and lessons for lecture discussion method group. Means, standard deviation and Mann - Whitney U test were the statistical tools employed in the analysis of the obtained data. Significance level for inferential test was set at .05 alpha. The study found out that significance difference existed between the pre and post higher-order thinking skills of the pupils in the computer-assisted instruction group. When taken as a whole significant difference existed between the pre and post higher-order thinking skills of the pupils in the lecture discussion method group. When taken separately, significant difference existed in the evaluation while no significant difference existed in analysis and synthesis. There was no significant difference in the pre intervention higher-order skills of the pupils between the computer-assisted instruction and lecture discussion method group. No significant difference likewise existed in the post intervention higher-order thinking skills of the pupils between the computer-assisted instruction and lecture discussion method group. The study also revealed that there was no significant difference in the mean gain scores of the pupils between the computer assisted instruction and the lecture discussion method group. The results showed that a particular method of teaching does not guarantee the development of higher-order thinking skills problems. It depends on several factors in the teaching learning process. The computer-assisted instruction being an interactive leaning activity, has stirred the creativity of the pupils. The lecture discussion method being a time tested strategy seems to offer a bright promise in the development of the higher-order thinking skills. Evaluation appears to have significant effect in terms of the development of higher order thinking skills. It also seems to show that the pupils need to improve in analysis and synthesis.
