Abstract:

The main purpose of this study was to determine the level of personal hygiene and sanitation practices of the residents along upper Magapa – Suage river basin. The descriptive – correlational research method was utilized in this study. The respondents of the present study involved 302 residents of the four barangays and were categorized as to sex, age and barangay. A researcher – made instrument was used for both personal hygiene and sanitation practices. Mean, standard deviation, t- test, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson r were used as statistical tools. Results showed that the level of personal hygiene and sanitation practices of the residents along upper Magapa – Suage river basin as an entire group was “better”. When grouped as to sex, male respondents had good hygiene practices while females had “better” personal hygiene practices while as to sanitation, males had ‘good” level practices and females had better sanitation practices. As to age, those respondents which belong to 18 - 30 and 31 - 42 age brackets had better personal hygiene and sanitation practices while those 43 – 54 age bracket were “good” in personal hygiene and “fair” level in sanitation practices. When grouped as to barangay, Mangil had “Best” hygiene practices while Barasalon had “poor” and Caraudan and Balanac had “better”. On the other hand, as to sanitation practices, Caraudan had “best” Mangil had “better”, Balanac had” good” and Barasalon “fair”. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the personal hygiene and sanitation practices of the residents along upper Magapa – Suage river basin were more or less of average level. There were certain areas in their hygiene and sanitation practices that need to be improved and developed. Finally, it was recommended that barangay officials and health workers, local government units such as the municipal health office and the office of social welfare and development should make some move and implement programs concerning health and sanitation awareness in all barangays in the municipality of Janiuay.
