In 2003 the Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Ordinance was implemented. The Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Taskforce (ICAST) is mandated to apprehend individuals caught smoking in public places. A survey was conducted to determine the extent of compliance and number of apprehensions in establishments near school areas. Observations in and out of establishments as well as interviews were conducted by student researchers. A total of 9 schools were visited and an overall average of 25 smokers per day was observed. The overall average per week was 135 smokers. Interviews with vendors and people in the area showed that there was 60% compliance with the ordinance while gave a spot assessment of 66.8%.
