Abstract:

This study was an initial evaluation of the Marine Transportation Program of John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation (JBLCF) fro SY 2001 to SY 200. It aimed at determining the interplay of adequacy of curricular experiences in the degree preparation at JBLCF with the level of competency on the tasks prescribed by STCW, job satisfaction, work-related benefits and problems met aboard the ship. The participants of the study were the 300 graduates who were grouped according to the year they graduated (BSMT). The study was conducted November 2005-January 2006.The data needed for the research were obtained through the researcher made questionnaires: The Level of Adequacy of Curricular Experiences in the degree preparation at JBLCF Questionnaires, Level of Competency in the Training Tasks Prescribed by STCW ' 95, Job Satisfaction Aboard Ship, Work-related Benefits Survey Form and Problems Encountered Aboard Ship, which were constructed, validated, pilot tested for the present investigation. The descriptive statistics used were frequency, means, standard deviations and ranks. The inferential statistics were, Analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Pearson r, and Linear regression. All inferential statistics were set to .05 alpha level of significance. All statistics were computed-processed through the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software. The study found out that the graduates considered their curricular experiences particularly in the general education subjects, professional subjects and basic safety training in the degree preparation at JBLCF as very adequate; their level of competency of tasks prescribed by STCW' 95 as high and a high level of satisfaction in their jobs. The graduates considered financial stability and sense of security for the family as their primary work-related benefits and they rarely encountered personal.social, professional and environmental problems. Significant differences were noted among the different batches of graduates in terms of their level of competency, job satisfaction and problemsencountered aboard the vessel. The Adequacy of Curricular Experiences in the degree preparation at JBLCF, Level of Competency of tasks prescribed by STCW, job satisfaction, work-related benefits, & problems encountered aboard ship are positively and significantly correlated. The level of Adequacy of Curricular Experiences was found to be a significant factor that influence the Level of Competency, Job Satisfaction, work-related benefits and problems encountered aboard ship.
